Requirements, Research, And Who Does It
There are several things that you have to remember when you are ready to find a home school teacher. High school students under age 18 currently living at home in North Carolina but (in lieu of conventional school attendance) taking courses toward a high school diploma through a distance learning program, can obtain a DEC only through the chief administrator of the North Carolina home school in which the student is currently enrolled.
The ESD does not maintain individual student files for home school students. Remember that even though a charter school is located in one county, it may serve and enroll students in adjacent counties as well. The duly authorized representative of the State of North Carolina who may inspect certain non-public (both home and conventional) school records (See G.S. 115C- 563(b) , 553 , & 561 ) is the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education.
If you are thinking of home-schooling your child, please call your local school superintendent’s office for information. Some, who’ve been considering the idea, may finally decide that it’s time to give homeschooling a try. We offer separate programs for children ages 5-8 and 9-12 years old.

Penn welcomes applications from students who chart non-conventional academic paths, including those educated through home schooling. If you are planning to attend a curriculum session, please fill out the additional details about your child (children) and 1st and 2nd choice of times. You may also choose to have your child tested in the local public school system if the school is testing at your child’s grade level (be aware that the results will be sent to the school).

Schooling At Home
While we cannot endorse any program or curriculum, we have included a listing of resources for your perusal that may be useful as you begin this all-important endeavor. If your child is enrolled in an online school such as Connections Academy, Baker Web Academy, K-12 Online, etc., you do not need to provide notice of home school. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, and you can begin homeschooling at any time, even in the middle of the school year.
The fact is that students need so “recall” time to be re-introduced to the information presented.
